days. we were down a couple of days ago in the u.s. virgin islands where we saw this as a much more powerful storm than we are feeling it here. in the virgin islands we were there and it was really strong enough to take roof its off of buildings and knock down trees, quite a bit of structural damage in the north eastern caribbean. real concern for life and limb. here in virginia, we are seeing a very different story because the storms moved so slowly, about 15 or 18 miles per hour, you can really leap-frog and keep up with it. >>> what are you hearing? are there people that left thinking the storm would do more as they come around and turn back. and this may be a great holiday weekend after all? >> it really depends on how travel goes tomorrow. it depends on how much rain is dumped on us and whether the itd flights go in on time.nn virginia beach was expecting a w huge tourist weekend. both the american musich the festival with reo speed wagon w set to play here as well osoc a the rock and roll halfhon, marathon. as many as 20,000 marathoners are expected to come here. a busy weeken

. i'm bret baier. supporters of the u.s. military policy against openly gay personnel scores a major victory today. but half a world away, american service members mourn the loss of several u.s. troops in a tragic accident. as a nato helicopter went down in southern afghanistan, making this the deadliest year in almost nine-year war. reporter conor powell has details from from kabul. >> reporter: helicopter crashes are fairly common in afghanistan, most due to mechanical failure and sometimes weather. in the past, taliban hit and brought down u.s. and international helicopters. in this case, the military says there are no reports of enemy fire in the area when the helicopter went down. they're discounting taliban claims they shot down the helicopter. the helicopter went down in an area that was a violent and nasty part of afghanistan where the taliban do roam free and are very, very strong. in addition to the nine u.s. troops killed, three other people including a u.s. civilian were also injured. today's deaths bring the total number of foreign troops killed to 529, a single-year rec

, the local police chief here confirmed that the gunman was shot dead at 4:48 eastern and officers used lethal force to take him out. he confirmed that the suspect which we identified as james lee entered the building at approximately 1:00 eastern. he carried with him a vest, and also a gun. in addition, we learned a few minutes ago he had two boxes. and two back packs. police here are still work ing under the theory that the boxes and back packs still in the building behind me may contain explosives. we learned that negotiation process or a communication began with the gunman. it went on for a couple of hours and then around 4:00, things were not going well and the tension was ratcheting up. at this point, tactical officers had moved in to the ground forearea of the discover -- ground floor area of the discovery building and they were able to see the gunman james lee with a camera that was now in place. just before 4:48, the suspect pulled out the handgun and pointed it at the hostage. one of the hostages. it was at that point that the police here felt that the hostages were in imminent dange
